What is Sciatic Pain?

Sciatic pain often can be excruciating and debilitating pain that is caused by the sciatic nerve or nerve root being compressed. The sciatic nerve is made up of the L4 through S2 nerve roots which coalesce at the pelvis to form the sciatic nerve. With a size of up to 2cm in diameter, the sciatic nerve is easily the largest nerve in the body. Sciatic pain is often worsened with bending at the waist, twisting, and sometimes even coughing. It is important to note that the result of sciatic nerve irritation is most often inflammation, which can be reduced via chiropractic manipulation and nutritional intervention.

Sciatica is a clinical diagnosis and therefore, through a detailed history and physical examination are necessary for a complete evaluation and diagnosis. This condition often lasts about six weeks, but some cases can become a chronic condition. Chronic sciatic pain is commonly treated with surgery. However, despite utilization by medical doctors, this approach is rarely successful. The Chiropractors at Queen City ChiroVisit can provide a non-surgical and conservative treatment for both acute and chronic sciatic pain, with highly effective results. Treatment involves patient education, neural flossing, soft tissue techniques, spinal mobilization and manipulation and more!

Spinal Manipulation:

Spinal manipulation is what chiropractors are best known for. We are extensively trained and it is a very safe procedure. The clinicians will use their hands to palpate for motion restrictions and provide high velocity, low amplitude thrusts on the joints to restore motion. For the sciatica, we often adjust the lower back, to help ease pressure off the sciatic nerve while easing muscle spasm.

Soft Tissue Techniques:

Whether due to a sedentary job, or sporadic recreational activities, the American lifestyle often results in tight and dysfunctional musculature. When the piriformis muscle, located deep in the buttocks, becomes tight, it can put pressure on the sciatic nerve, causing irritation and inflammation. The clinicians at Queen City ChiroVisit are trained in effective strategies to release muscle tension. Whether through hands-on techniques, or utilization of the TheraGun, our clinicians relax your muscle, and ease your sciatic symptoms.

Patient Education:

Ultimately, your health requires your engagement. Our clinicians are knowledgeable, and ready and willing to teach you strategies to reduce your own symptoms. Whether through neural flossing, stretching, or postural and lifestyle changes, Queen City ChiroVisit will help you put your sciatic pain in the past.
